THE motorist responsible for the dangerous- driving death of 37-year-old Odessa Howard, and life-threatening injuries to her husband, Peter Howard, on Tuesday morning appeared in the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrates Court and was granted $135,000 bail.But the investigating police rank who had witnessed the post- mortem(PM) and was present when the motorist appeared in court, allegedly did not produce the PM certificate showing the injuries and cause of death.
A copy of the post- mortem results determined that the victim suffered a fractured spine; broken neck; punctured heart and fractured skull.
On Sunday June 21,2015, Peter Howard, policeman and former marathoner and his wife, Odessa, as pillion rider were driving his motor cycle CH 4855 along the Nismes Public Road, West Bank Demerara, when they were struck from behind by a motor car.
On impact, Odessa was hurled into the air and landed heavily on the road, instantly breaking her neck.
The couple was picked up and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where Odessa was pronounced dead on arrival. Her husband was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted in an unconscious state and suffering severe brain injury and other injuries to the head, left leg and arm.
Yesterday, as he continued to slip in and out of consciousness, Howard’s condition remained critical.
Peter Howard, 55, who resides at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was apparently visiting his wife at Nismes. However, the couple had left the home temporarily to go out to a shop to buy snacks for their children to take to school the following day, when the accident occurred.
