A COMMON-LAW husband was yesterday brought before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, after he slapped his common-law wife in a drunken rage.Leroy Daniels, 23, admitted that on Sunday at North East La Penitence, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Juliet Deonarine.
The prosecution facts revealed that Daniels accused Deonarine of stealing $16,000 from him. After she denied his accusation, he became annoyed and slapped her.
In his defense he told the court, he came home with the money in his pocket, and went into the bathroom. After leaving the bathroom, he discovered that the money was missing. He said that he questioned Deonarine but when she denied, he slapped her.
Daniels also lamented that he was already angry with her, since he did not believe she was pregnant with his son.
After careful consideration, the Chief Magistrate ordered him to seek counselling. She said that after she receives the report from the counsellor, she will rule on the matter.
Daniels was placed on his own recognisnce and the matter was adjourned to June 1.
