A THIRTY-one-year-old diver accused of discharging a loaded firearm at a man yesterday appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and was granted $200,000 bail for the offence.It is alleged between 1-13 November, 2014 at Sunflower Lane, Linden, Sheldon Joseph discharged a loaded firearm at Quincy David, with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or to cause him grievous bodily harm.
Joseph denied the allegation and his lawyer Denise Hodge explained that the shot was fired by her client in self-defence, citing that David is of unsound mind.
Police Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru did not reveal the facts to the court. However he objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. In addition, a gun was allegedly used in the commission of the offence.
The magistrate overruled the prosecution’s objection and granted bail. The defendant was ordered to report to Wismar Police Station once per week. The matter was transferred to Linden Magistrate’s Court for April 28.
