ALL Albion Sugar Estate workers injured yesterday, after the motor lorry they were travelling in toppled, will receive the best care available and will not lose any of the benefits to which they are entitled. This was the commitment of President Donald Ramotar who, in a statement last evening, said, “Our comrades from the sugar industry, particularly our field workers, have been working diligently to keep production on pace with our target.

“We continue to be very grateful for the maximal effort being made by the sugar workers in our country. It is my hope that all stakeholders continue to support each other as we work together to overcome the challenges and threats to our industry from both local and international sources.”
The Head of State disclosed that, after learning of the accident, he was in touch with management officials from the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), as well as subject ministers of his Cabinet.
He said, “I was pleased that they (GuySuCo) had already put in place and committed all necessary resources to ensure quality care and treatment is provided.
“I am also in contact with the health sector to ensure that they are able to provide all health interventions necessary for the quick healing of any injury and ensure that those who may need specialist care are able to immediately access all care needed in the short and long-term.
“At the same time I have also directed officials within my Government, specifically in the health sector to assist in this regard.”
Acting President, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, together with Agriculture Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, and Health Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, were on site yesterday visiting with the injured workers and GuySuCo officials.
“I am aware that they have been at the hospital and they will work with GuySuCo and the health officials to ensure optimal care,” Mr. Ramotar said.
SPEEDY RECOVERY
He wished those injured a speedy recovery. “It is the hope of myself and Government that those injured make a speedy recovery and their families benefit from the established mechanisms of counselling and assistance in this difficult period.”
The President is currently overseas on State business, relative to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government meeting in Jamaica with United States President Barrack Obama. He is also expected to attend the seventh Summit of the Americas in Panama City.
“I will continue to monitor the situation while overseas on State business,” he assured.
Yesterday’s incident was the first major industrial accident at GuySuCo in more than a year.
