INTIMIDATION of the party’s activists and candidates, as well as the destruction of campaign materials across the country, has been condemned in the strongest possible terms by the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C).“The party has observed with great concern the bullyism and efforts aimed at intimidating several of its candidates and party activists via electronic mails and telephone calls,” the PPP/C said in a statement yesterday.
It said that it has also noticed the “uncouth actions” of persons who have torn down its elections campaign posters, billboards and party flags in several parts of the country, including Georgetown.
The ruling party said: “The PPP/C has always championed the freedom of opinion and choice and therefore views these actions of intimidation and destruction as contrary to the spirit of unity, peace and freedom.
“Everyone is entitled to his or her freedom of association, political choice and expression in keeping with the laws of Guyana and therefore, we firmly urge those culpable to desist from bullying others because of their political choice.”
All considered, the PPP/C called for the demonstration of tolerance, maturity and respect for persons and property to prevail during this campaign season leading up to the May 11 General and Regional elections.
