NIP leader files Constitutional Motion against AG & GECOM

LAWYER Saphier Husain, who changed his name by Deed Poll from Saphier Husain to Saphier Husain Subedar, on Tuesday filed a Constitutional Motion against the Attorney-General and the Elections Commission.THE National Independence Party Leader (NIP) has chosen as his symbol a tiger, which persons say bears facial resemblance to that candidate. He is asking the court for five declarations and two orders, one of which is that the court declares the Election Law (Amendment) Act unconstitutional.

One of the conservatory orders he seeks asks the court to stay the operation of Election Laws (Amendment) Act No. 15 of 2000 Sub-Section until the hearing and determination of the matter before the court.

Senior Counsel Mr. Ashton Chase and other officers from the AG’s Chambers were in attendance at Court on Tuesday when the Chief Justice granted the respondents leave to file an affidavit in answer.

The matter has been adjourned to April 10 at 14:00 hrs.
