Venezuelan fined $30,000 for overstaying

A VENEZUELAN national was on Friday fined $30,000 by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for overstaying his time in Guyana, where he was on vacation.Failure to pay the fine will result in one month’s imprisonment.
The charge against Julio Pereira stated that from February 3 to March 9 at Georgetown, he failed to comply with the conditions under which permission was granted for him to stay in Guyana from January 20 to February 2 .
Pereira pleaded guilty to the charge through an interpreter. However, the man explained through his translator that because of the language barrier he had misinterpreted the time granted him.
