Second stage of Cheddi Jagan Memorial cycle race on Sunday in Berbice

THE second stage of the Dr Cheddi Jagan Memorial cycle road race will wheel off on Sunday in the Ancient County of Berbice at 09:00hrs from in front the People’s Progressive Party/Civic’s Freedom House office on Main Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice. The BK International-sponsored stage which is being coordinated by national cycle coach Hassan Mohamed will see defending champion Alanzo Greaves put to the test as he will have many in-form cyclists to out-duel.

The likes of Marlon `Fishy’ Williams, Hamzah Eastman, Orville Hinds, Raynauth Jeffrey, Michael Anthony and Paul DeNobrega readily come to mind.
Already, Williams has won two races since the 2015 cycle season started late in January, while Hinds has chalked up one victory and Eastman one and they are all `firing’, so Greaves will have his work cut out if he is to successfully defend his title, come Sunday.
Last year, Greaves clocked two hours 17 minutes 59 seconds for the stage from New Amsterdam to Hogstye on the Corentyne Coast before turning back to finish on the main road at Port Mourant, just outside Babu John where the late Guyanese President Dr jagan was cremated.
This will be the 18th year that the event will be staged in Berbice and it was in Berbice that the first memorial race for the late great Guyanese leader was staged.
Alanzo Ambrose won last year’s junior category, while Turan Harris won the veterans’ category. Clyde Jacobs won the mountain bike category, Naomi Singh took the ladies’ title and Anthony Fariah the veterans’ Over-60 title.
The first six finishers will be rewarded for their efforts as well as the first three juniors, the first three mountain bikers and the first three ladies.
Stage one which was held last Sunday in the West Demerara area was won by Hamzah Eastman.
Stage three will be held on the Essequibo Coast on March 22.
