GECOM Numbers – Over 6,000 take advantage of seventh registration cycle

SOME 6,003 persons have taken advantage of the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) seventh cycle of registration, which ended on Wednesday (December 31, 2014), according to the a reliable source with the Commission.The seventh cycle of continuous registration commenced on November 30th, 2014, and allowed persons the opportunity to register for the first time, conduct transfers and make changes to their registration details.
The source disclosed too that the Commission is in the process of verifying the residency of the new applicants for registration.
The official added that there were also 1,163 changes and corrections to existing registration information that was done during the seventh continuous cycle of registration.
“There were also 1,248 transfers,” the source said, explaining that this is due to due to issues related to change of address, etc.
The official noted that the Commission’s employees at various locations worked late into the night to facilitate persons who were awaiting service.
Additionally, now that the seventh cycle of continuous registration has ended, a Claims and Objections period is expected to commence soon.
At the end of the sixth cycle of continuous registration, in the latter part of June, there were registrations of some 14,981 new persons, 14,942 of whom have already been verified. There were also 2,004 transfers, owing to issues related to changes of address, and 2,747 changes/corrections to existing registration information. Prior to the sixth cycle of continuous registration, the last such exercise ended in December 2013.
