THE Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on Thursday hosted a number of foreign dignitaries from the Federal Republic of Germany as part of its efforts to ensure the smooth conduct of elections.A GECOM press statement has said that its Chairman, Dr. Steve Surujbally, had met with German Ambassador to CARICOM and the Eastern Caribbean States, Lutz H. Görgens; Honorary Consul for the Federal Republic of Germany, Ben ter Welle; and Director of the German Federal Foreign Office responsible for Mexican, Central American and Caribbean affairs, Rüdiger Lotz, in a high level meeting that addressed matters of concern, including GECOM’s preparedness for the imminent National and Regional Elections which, according to the statement, are most likely to be held in early 2015.

The Commission’s ability to effectively and efficiently administer and manage Local Government Elections after National and Regional Elections was also addressed.

Other matters addressed included GECOM’s Public Relations/Civic and Voter Education programme, and its impact on voters and the general public, as well as enhancing the voting process in Guyana, as the Commission aims to improve the processing and transmission of elections results.

GECOM Chairman Dr. Steve Surujbally expressed his gratitude towards the German delegation for its most perceptive queries, and urged its members to maintain a high level of interest in what obtains in Guyana, particularly regarding elections and their management. (Ravin Singh)
