GUYANA and West Indies U-19 opening batsman Shimron Hetmeyer, recently was the beneficiary of a sponsorship deal by overseas-based Guyanese Krishna Appiah of The Bronx, New York and Ravi Etwaroo, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cricket Zone and Trophy World of Castle Hill, Bronx, New York.
The sponsors, who have been following Hetmeyer’s development, have donated a cricket bat and gloves as an initial gesture.
The donation was made possible through the intervention of Berbice inter county cricketer, and captain of the police Berbice Division cricket team, Station Sergeant Michael Newland.
Newland told the Berbice Media that he had been following Hetmeyer’s career over the years, and is impressed by his discipline and work ethic.
Additionally, he sees a bright future for the lad who had lacked sponsorship although he has displayed great potential.
Consequently, Newland took the initiative to contact the sponsors, who readily agreed to assist by sending the much-needed items which were handed over to the overjoyed youth.
In addition to the cricket gear, Hetemeyer was promised clothing, along with other equipment in the future.
The 18-year-old aggressive left-handed opening batsman has represented Guyana at the senior level and the West Indies U-19 team.
At age 17 he had the distinction of representing Berbice and Guyana from U-15, U-17, U-19 and senior levels.
Hetmeyer, who represents the Young Warriors Cricket Club of East Canje, is the younger brother of former Guyana U-19 batsman and senior Berbice inter county player Seon Hetmeyer. He has recently joined his sibling as being one of few brothers to have scored centuries at the regional U-19 level.
At the simple ceremony which was held at the Central Police station, in New Amsterdam, Hetmeyer expressed gratitude to the Guyana Police Force, and especially to Sergeant Michael Newland, for being so kind-hearted, in showing concern for him.
Heartfelt thanks were also extended to Mr. Etwaroo and Mr. Appiah for showing interest in his career, although thousands of miles separate them. He also thanked his parents Gladstone and Agnes Hetmeyer and his coach, Hubern Evans, for their continual support.
Meanwhile, those attending the simple ceremony and expressing best wishes to the cricketer and his sponsors were Assistant Superintendent Guy Nurse; Inspector Seseupaul Jagroop; and acting President of the Berbice Cricket Board and President of the Young Warriors Cricket Club, Mr.Anil Beharry. The gentlemen expressed congratulations and best wishes to the young Hetmeyer, while thanking the sponsors for their support.
