SHELDON EDWARDS, who, it is alleged sexually, penetrated a 13- year-old girl, will face a jury of his peers at the next sitting of the Berbice Assizes. .The ruling was made by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus after she found that a prima facie case, based on the evidence of the prosecution, was made out against him.
The cane harvester of Pepper Street, Heatburn, East Bank Berbice, had been ordered to post $200,000 bail when his matter was initially called in May, last.
The alleged sexual assault is the second involving the teen .The previous charge of sexual assault,for which the defendant was ordered to post $75,000 bail, is currently before the court .
Detective Constable Keisha Deane Smith swore to the accuracy of the information gathered in the police file, which has resulted in the defendant being arraigned.
Particulars of the charge stated that on April 1, 2013 at Pepper Street, Heathburn, Edwards engaged in sexual penetration of a 13- year- old girl.
Reports reveal that it was on Easter Monday, when the child opted to watch a movie instead of going kite- flying with her siblings .It was during this period when the defendant visited and began fondling the child, before inserting his penis into her vagina.
Her screams resulted in her mother, who was outside, rushing to her aid and the accused was seen moving from atop the child, as blood gushed from between her legs .
The alleged victim was subsequently taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where she was seen and examined by a medical practitioner.
