THE challenges related to achieving effective protection against unemployment in Latin America and the Caribbean is the focus of discussions at the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB’s) 2014 Labour Markets and Social Security Regional Policy Dialogue underway in Seoul, South Korea. 

Joining the discussions on Guyana’s behalf is its Labour Minister, Dr. Nanda K. Gopaul. The IV Regional Dialogue for Labour Policy and Social Security was organised by the bank’s Labour Market and Social Security Unit for from September 22-26, and brings together a select group of international experts and high-level government officials in charge of labour and social security issues.
South Korea has implemented a comprehensive protection system against unemployment and now has an “Employment Insurance System”, to guarantee the protection of unemployed workers, promote employment, and improve the professional capabilities of workers. Hence, included in the policy dialogue is a presentation of South Korea’s protection system against unemployment, a visit to an employee attention centre and a firsthand look at features of an integrated employment promotion system.
