IN an effort to contribute to the cleanliness of the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre and out of consideration for the health of the children who are cared for there, the police on Thursday made a very useful donation to the institution.

The force through its ‘A’ Division Sub-Division 1 police and station management committee donated detergents and deodorising necessities to the centre, which was accepted by the staff nurse on behalf of the children.
Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle, which was present during the simple handing-over ceremony, Nurse Candice Kewley said that the donation was indeed timely and would assist in the efforts of the centre in ensuring that the children are able to dwell in a comfortable and clean environment.

The donation which included detergents, soaps, disinfectants and other germ-killing liquids and pieces, was described as needs of the centre by the nurse.
She said that the children with disabilities at the centre do not move around a lot and are on the floor most of the time. With that, she reiterated the need and efforts by the facility to always ensure that the floors are clean.
“We try our best to ensure that we maintain a clean environment which is very conducive to them and these items will help us a far way in keeping that standard up” Kewley told the Chronicle.
In addition to the detergents, the police also donated several feeding chairs, something that has long been a burning need at the centre to assist in feeding the children who at all times need to be in an upright position when being fed. Also, it was pointed out that due to the unavailability of the chairs, the day centre was forced to turn back children but now, according to the nurse, there is room to accommodate more children.

Speaking on behalf of the police at the handing over was No1 Sub Divisional Officer Assistant Superintendent, Antony Vanderhyden, who was also accompanied by the Deputy Commander of the Division Dion Moore, Community Development Officer Assistant Superintendent, Althea Scipio and other ranks of the Division, along with members from the Station Management Committee.
Vanderhyden told the Chronicle that the visit has enabled the police to have a better understanding of what the needs of the centre are and those needs will be met. He said that the move by the police also forms part of its approach to engage members of the public and complements the efforts of the modernisation process.
Meanwhile, the president of the Station Management Committee did make a commitment to engage the other members of the committee to ensure that assistance to the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre is provided on a monthly basis, even as the police have already committed to revisiting the centre sooner to make other donations.
