KARRAU Village has been designated the Heritage Village 2014 and yesterday it hosted Heritage festivities.

Amerindian Heritage Month is being observed under the theme: “Traditional Embodiment for Amerindians Development.”
Karrau Village is in Region 7 (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) and is located in the lower Mazaruni River, just five minutes away from Bartica by boat.
Karrau and other neighbouring villages were selected to host this year’s Heritage Day activities and to showcase their cultural heritage as Amerindian Heritage Month is celebrated.
The village is home to approximately 310 Amerindians and was first inhabited by the Arawaks.

The main economic activities of Karrau are logging, farming, mining and transportation services.
There is one building that houses both the primary and nursery schools with a total of 40 pupils manned by five teachers.
Karrau has a guest house; a benab at the Community Centre Ground located in the precincts of the school building and a Health Centre.
The Village Office supervised by Toshao, James Cornelius is equipped with an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) to transport residents and goods.
Residents of Karrau Village seem satisfied. They said when they are not working, they occupy their time by playing, friendly games of cricket and football among others.
The village has a privately owned guest house and is considered as the gateway to the interior, leading by trail to several mining areas such as Buckhall, Three Miles, Blue Mountain and Goat Creek.
