Demerara Criminal Session opens with list of 230 cases

THE traditional ceremonial parade yesterday heralded the three judges assigned for the Demerara Criminal Session which has a list of 230 cases.
The assigned judges are Justice Dawn Gregory, Justice Navindra Singh and Justice William Ramlal.Justice Ramlal took part of the proceedings by inspecting the Guard of Honour drawn from 60 ranks of the Tactical Services Unit and took the salute during the march past on South Road outside of the High Court.
Following the parade, the judges showed their readiness to get ahead with their assignments as they had the prosecution selecting three murder cases for trial.
However, in one case the defence lawyers would not be ready until today.
The first trial to be started was the John Street murder case involving murder accused Renwick Alexander, called ‘Pompey’, who is accused of the killing of Carl Thomas, called ‘Dog’. This trial is before Justice Navindra Singh and a mixed jury.
The cases the judges have on their respective lists include 230 cases, with 57 for murder, 25 for manslaughter, 29 for wounding, 74 for carnal knowledge, 38 for rape, five for incest, two dealing with narcotics, nine for buggery, and causing death by dangerous driving and other cases.
