Robbed: The Universal Sports Store

UNIVERSAL Sports Store at Lot 101 Second Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, was robbed of about $300,000 in brand name apparel early Saturday morning.

The distressed owner, Andrew Budhan said he was alerted to the burglary at his business by a member of his staff, Natalie Ramkarran, after she turned up for work and noticed a rack of various clothing missing.
Budhan said he is in the process of calculating his losses and expressed disappointed at the police response and attitude to his distress call.
He explained that his employee, Ramkarran made the report at Alberttown Police Station about midday on Saturday but ranks did not show up until after 16:00 hrs and took a hurried report from her, without even dusting

for fingerprints.
Budhan told the Guyana Chronicle that the policemen said it was a petty crime and left.
He stated that the rack of sports apparel was at the side of the store near a grilled window which was forced open to let the burglars help themselves to the booty that was within their hand reach.

First break-in
Budhan said he only opened the business at that location three months ago and it was the first break-in which took place about 03:00 hrs on Saturday.
It was reported by a neighbours who heard noises coming from the store at the time but did not bother to investigate.
He said one of the reasons he opened the branch was because of the constant burglaries at his other store which is situated at Lot 339 East Street.
Budhan pointed out that this is his seventh year in business which he started out in Fifth Street, Alberttown, another part of the city, that was broken into twice last year, over the past three years.
His East Street store was not spared by burglars who robbed there several times, too, he said.
The visibly upset businessman said, in the effort to protect his enterprise, he is in the process of installing security cameras inside and outside of the stores but, in the meantime, he has employed a security guard.
He stated the thieves gained entry to the Alberttown store by jumping over his perimeter fence and breaking open the side window where they spent some time clearing off the rack of sports clothing.
Budhan said, within the past couple years, his losses at the stores ran into millions of dollars which he cannot afford and he is appealing to the police to pay some more attention to his burglaries.
Ramkarran said yesterday that, when she first opened the East Street store, at about 08:30 hrs, she saw the empty rack but thought that her employer had removed the merchandise unknown to her.
But, upon closer examination, she saw the window slightly ajar and telephoned her employer who advised her to inform the police.
