THE first ever training school, to enhance the capabilities of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), is expected to be completed in February.

Chief Fire Officer, Marlon Gentle said the facility that is being built in the sprawling compound of the Leonora Fire Station, on West Coast of Demerara, upon completion will see the installation of stimulators.
He added that, in total $75M, was budgeted for capital works but, so far, $71.3M was expended in 2013 following the start of three phases of the project.
Gentle said the contract for phase three has been awarded and works are moving apace for the completion of the training building, drill square, tarmac and driveway.
Phase two, which was finished early in 2013, included the T-shaped Leonora Fire Station that houses the barracks, mess hall, accommodation area and the lecture hall, Gentle said.
In that phase also was the fence, culverts, bridges and the levelling of the approximately four acres land.
The Fire Chief added that it will be the first area completely dedicated to the GFS training and would accommodate most of the related needs, with all basic amenities, including classrooms, facilities for both practical and theoretical practice in all disciplines of firefighting and firemanship.
