Cuban jailed, fined for immigration offences

A CUBAN national was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and fined $30,000 on Monday last on conviction, for uttering a forged document and overstaying his time in Guyana. Through an interpreter, Lesmond Martinez pleaded guilty to one charge that said, on Saturday, December 28, at Moleson Creek, Corentyne, Berbice, with intent to defraud, he uttered to Inspector John Brown, an immigration officer, a United Kingdom (Great Britain) passport number 307651058 in favour of himself, knowing same to be forged.

The defendant also pleaded guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, between Sunday, November 10 and Saturday, December 28 at Moleson Creek, Corentyne, he failed to comply with the permit granting him stay in Guyana and overstayed the period.
Police Corporal Renetta Bentham, prosecuting, told the Court that the Cuban entered Guyana on November 10 and was allowed a period of one month but he went to Moleson Creek to extend his stay in Guyana and uttered the passport which belongs to Carlos Raphael Rodriguez.
