Surprised by opposition’s support for USAID project

I have heard statements made by the Leader of the opposition on the USAID project that the government disapproved.

I understand that these leaders have taken position on two aspects.
1. Their support for the USAID project
2. Their support for the US authorities disregarding/ignoring the matter
I am troubled by this development. I wonder under what circumstances would political leaders of an independent country publicly support the decision of its government being disregarded/ignored by a foreign state?
I admire the government’s approach in asking the US to confirm in writing its intentions on this matter.
For me, it is regrettable that our own leaders in the opposition have taken public positions on this matter while the involved party, the US, has chosen to remain silent.
Perhaps a parliamentary debate can assist Guyanese in understanding their reasoning.
