Prisoner found hanging at Blairmont lockups

BALKISSOON Dechand, 42, of Bennette Dam, Rosignol, East Berbice, was Thursday evening found hanging from a grill in the Blairmont Police Station lockups.

According to reports, the labourer had appeared before Magistrate Rhonel Weaver at the Fort Wellington Magistrate Court on October 17, when a domestic violence charge was instituted. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was subsequently placed on a six month bond.
But he allegedly breached the protection order when he visited his wife, Geeta Narine, and dealt her several slaps, resulting in a report being made to the police.
Dechand was arrested and placed in the lockups.
On Thursday evening, a rank, carrying out an inspection, saw the prisoner hanging from the grill with a tee-shirt tied around his neck.
His body is currently at the Fort Wellington Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
