All flights resume as LIAT pilots return to work – airline agrees pilots’ concerns are legitimate

ALL pilots employed with the regional airline, LIAT, are back on the job and all flights have resumed, according to the airline in response to a follow-up e-mail sent by this newspaper.

Pilots employed with the regional airline had stayed away from their jobs on Tuesday and Wednesday, severely disrupting the schedule of the Antigua-based airline.
However, the management of LIAT and the Pilots Association met to discuss the issues and concerns, which are affecting the pilots and which resulted in the strike action taken by the pilots.
The meeting was held yesterday in Antigua and the pilots were represented by Chairman of the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association, Captain Carl Burke and LIAT was represented by its acting Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Julie Reifer-Jones.
The atmosphere in which the meeting was conducted was described as cordial.
In a press statement issued by the company yesterday morning, it pointed out that based on the discussions it was determined by the management of LIAT that the concerns raised by the pilots through their representative were legitimate and that both sides would continue discussions in an effort to address the issues.
The airline stated that it is working to restore normal operations throughout the region to ensure that dislocated passengers are taken to their respective destinations.
And yesterday in a follow-up e-mail sent by this newspaper to the company, LIAT responded to two of several questions. The airline stated that all flights have resumed and all pilots are back on the job.
They, however, failed to say how many passengers were affected as a result of the strike action by the pilots, and whether the company was forced to seek the services of pilots from outside its pool.
