GFF/Banks Beer Premier League – Alpha register fourth consecutive victory

… with 2-0 win against Buxton United
ONE goal in each half was all Alpha `The Hammer’ United needed to secure a 2-0 win against Buxton United, when action in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF)/Banks Beer Premier League continued on Sunday at the Buxton Community Centre ground.

Anthony `Awo’ Abrams and Gregory `Jackie Chan’ Richardson were on target for Alpha United in the 17th and 72nd minutes respectively.
Playing an aggressive game from the start, the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) side surged to the lead as the ball was played from their defence to team captain Dwight Peters in offensive third.
Peters then headed the ball to Abrams who took control of it at the top of the opposition’s 18-yard box and on his second touch, Abrams slotted it past Buxton United’s custodian.
Alpha United continued to raid their opponents’ goal area, but poor finishing denied them another goal in the first session.
Both Peters and Abrams had sure scoring opportunities but their team mate Devon Moseley who is their central defender, found himself in the off-side position on both occasions.
With a 1-0 lead going into the second period, Alpha United, facing the Atlantic breeze, carried the attack to Buxton United but found the opposition standing up to the test and it took quite a while for the GFA team to take control of play.
However, after 27 minutes, Alpha made a build-up from midfield and the ball was played by Peters squarely to Richardson who slid it past the advancing Buxton United’s custodian.
Alpha United with 12 points to their name, will next meet East Bank Football Association’s Grove Hi-Tech on Sunday at the GFC ground from 18:00hrs.
Asked if he thinks his charges can play unbeaten in the League, Dover, the head national coach said while he would love to defeat all opposing teams, he knows it would be a very difficult task, but once the players train hard, stay focused and play to their game plan, it can happen.
Dover said it is good to see teams like Den Amstel, Buxton United and Milerock playing a high standard of football. This he said augurs well for them
He also said he is saddened to know that teams who are not at this (national) level to play in a national League are actually a part of the League.
“These teams are in the League ahead of a team like Slingerz FC which has some of the country’s more experienced players who have to look on from the sideline as other teams like Young Achievers and Mahaica Determinators play,” Dover lamented.
In the other match at the Buxton ground, Upper Demerara Football Association’s (UDFA) Mileriock defeated Mahaica Determinators 3-1.
Meanwhile, at the Den Amstel ground on the West Coast Demerara, the home side trounced GFA’s Santos 5-2, while Riddim Squad edged Young Achievers 1-0.
Playing at the #5 ground, West Coast Berbice, New Amsterdam United beat Silver Shattas 5-1 and BV/Triumph defeated Rosignol United 2-0.
At the Georgetown Football Club, ground, BK Western Tigers edged Grove Hi-Tech 1-0, while Guyana Defence Force came from two goals down to edge Winners Connection 3-2.
