RESIDENTS of St. Monica/Karawab villages in Upper Pomeroon River are calling on the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) and Digicel to extend cellphone and internet services to their communities, located 45 miles from Charity on the Essequibo Coast.
People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Councillor Mr. Omesh Oditt said so at the October statutory meeting of the Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam) Regional Democratic Council (RDC).
He called on the Council to address the issue urgently, so that the services would become available.
Regional Chairman, Mr. Parmanand Persaud promised that the RDC will follow up the matter and instructed that letters be sent to the two companies, requesting cellphone and internet services to St. Monica, Karawab and Kabakaburi.
Several residents of St. Monica said they have to go on a high hill or climb a tall tree to make calls with their cell phones.
Meanwhile, scores of young people said they want to connect to the outside world and Facebook by surfing the internet but GT&T and Digicel have not made the technology available to the Upper Pomeroon areas.
