A statement from the PPP last evening said the party remains encouraged by the PPP/C Government’s continued commitment to accountability and transparency for which it has a proud record.
“Since 1992, the ruling party introduced some of the more progressive anti-corruption measures, laws and parliamentary reforms in the region, in order to enhance accountability and transparency.
“Many of these initiatives have been to our country’s advantage as they reduced loopholes for revenue losses, while yielding opportunities for greater inflows which are being channeled towards the country’s consistent pro-poor pro-growth developmental agenda.
“However, while the PPP recognises there have been significant achievements in this area, there are still outstanding aspects of our efforts to build one of the more robust accountability and transparency frameworks in the Region.
“The OAS on-site team’s visit is especially appreciated because of the opportunity it provides to contribute to our government’s measures to build on its accountability and transparency measures as a follow-up to the implementation of recommendations made during the first cycle review in 2006.
“The Party is also enthused by the government’s deliberate inclusion of various civil society actors in the review process, in recognition of the important role they play as partners in the overall development of our country.
“The PPP assures the OAS and its follow-up mechanism on the implementation of the Inter-American Convention Against Corruption (MESICIC) of the continued support of its leadership in improving accountability and transparency in Guyana,” the party statement concludes
