THE SECOND RRT Enterprises-sponsored 11-race cycle programme is set for the inner circuit of the National Park tomorrow from 09:00hrs.
Most of Guyana’s top pedal-pushers are expected to match stamina and tactics in the feature event that covers a distance of 35 laps and is open to schoolboys and novices and which will see Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club’s Robin Persaud defend his title.
Among the cyclists expected to face the starter in the feature event are members of the five-man team that represented Guyana in the just concluded Bigi Bergi four-stage road race in neighbouring Suriname.
The five are: team captain Alanzo Greaves, Raynauth Jeffrey, Michael Anthony, Orville Hinds and Enzo Matthews, with Greaves showing tremendous form on the local scene prior to his participation in the Bigi Bergi race and will be out to prove that he is still the top local cyclist at the moment.
To date, Greaves has chalked up seven victories in the National Park and six on the road, for a combined total of 13 victories this season.
Greaves will, however, have to be wary of the experienced Persaud, the national Road Race Champion Jeffrey, and his own Roraima Bikers Club teammates in Warren ‘40’ McKay, Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton and Marlon `Fishy’ Williams, along with Christopher Persaud, Alonso Ambrose ands Shaquille Agard, among others.
Jeffrey and Anthony were the only two members of the team to place among the top 10 places in the Bigi Bergi road race, finishing sixth and tenth respectively, while another Guyanese, Godfrey Pollydore, who was not a part of the Guyana team, placed fourth overall, with former national Road Race Champion Orville Hinds placing 21st and Greaves 24th.
Persaud clocked 1h.18mins:17.12secs in winning last year’s event, but judging from the performances of the cyclists on the local circuit to date, that time could be one of the past, when the feature event ends tomorrow.
Another event that promises much excitement is the 10-lap race for juveniles, which Andrew Hicks, Cleveland King and Ray Rawle will look to dominate and at the same time emulate Jeffrey, who won this event last year in a time of 23m:06.64secs.
Other races on the day’s programme include one-lap races for BMX boys and girls 6-9 years of age, three-lap races for BMX boys and girls 9-12 and 12-14 years of age, a five-lap race for mountain bikers, five-lap races for veterans under and over 50 years as well as veterans over 60 years of age.
Junior Niles is the defending champion for the five-lap race for veterans under 50 years of age, Richard Charles will defend the 5-lap race for mountain bikers while Alfie Sonaram, who won the 3-lap race for BMX boys 9-12 year of age last year, is expected to make a successful defence of his title.
RRT’s representative R. Ramrattan aka `Shawn’ will be on hand to present prizes to the respective winners at the end of the day’s activities.
