Residents slam Mon Repos /La Reconnaissance NDC over drainage woes

East Coast residents in the Annandale and Lusignan areas have slammed the Mon Repos /La Reconnaissance Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC)  for  seeming to show no  interest in having the drains and canals within the area cleared for better drainage, despite  the bad weather conditions lately and the steady rain.

altAccording to reports reaching the Guyana Chronicle, after numerous complaints from residents about clogged drains resulting in flood conditions  when it rains, the NDC has  still continued to ignore their cries for help in this situation.
The NDC, however, is  claiming that they are unable to carry out their work as a result of lack of equipment and a shortage of workers.
Meanwhile, residents speaking to this publication are pleading with the authority to perform their duties, noting that the main reason for paying their rates and taxes is because they want to live in a clean, flood-free environment.
The residents emphasised that drainage in the area is ineffective  because the outlets and trenches are blocked by vegetation and garbage.
The NDC on many occasions has admitted that one of the major issues affecting the area is floodin, but assured that the council is doing everything in its authority to fix this matter.
Residents, however,  opined that  the NDC is  not doing anything to rectify the matter as officials of the council have been accused of “not paying attention to the areas at all.”
Additionally, the garbage piles found on the roadside appears to have grown tremendously over the past weeks and some of this stuff tends to fall into the trenches  and  cause the blockage.
An overseas-based Guyanese who came to visit relatives in the area recently approached this reporter and lamented that “the garbage situation here is beyond council’s control and an eyesore –  how can I walk in the corner of a road and walk through a pile of garbage to get where I’m going? It leaves me no other choice but to walk middle of the road where I’m bound to be hit by a car –  it’s filthy, unsightly and very unhealthy.”
The man said that the NDC needs to open their eyes and look at what the real situation is and not run behind unimportant personal issues.

WHERE THE NDC OFFICIALS LIVE

Another resident from the Lusignan area told this newspaper that in areas where the NDC officials live, the drains are well cleaned and there is no garbage in sight for them to smell and have to walk or drive near and that is not fair as we are people just like them and “we would like to live in a clean place too.”
Residents have also charged that when they go into the NDC to make complaints about these matters,  they are usually ignored by officials there although  some may listen and give an  assurance that “we will take a look at it later.”
