High paddy bug infestation in Region 2

IN the northern and southern sections of Region 2, rice farmers have reported that there is a very high paddy bug presence and infestation of their crops. Harvesting of the present crop is expected to begin by the end of this month.

Farmers are optimistic that overall the crop will result in low prices with an average of 25 bags per acre. Some 31,500 acres are expected to be affected in this region. The indication is that the bugs have increased over the years with no new safe and effective insecticide for the paddy bug control in rice.
The bug infestation has taken its toll on Guyana’s rice industry for the past decade. This would result in the loss of export earnings in US dollars and a shortfall for the domestic market.
During the spring crop 2013, an outbreak of paddy bug infestation was noticed in the region. The prolonged wet periods accompanied by strong winds can be attributed for the migration and dispersal of bugs which have become epidemic in the region.
These pests cause serious damage to paddy at the milking stage and all the commercial varieties, including the rustic and other varieties were found infested by this pest.Paddy bugs can be found at the top and base of the rice plants above the water level. Because of the unusual nature of the weather pattern at this time, the bugs tend to multiply. The main problem facing the crop has been the lack of early bug-sweeping in the fields by extension officers to determine the bug population within the various sections.
Whatever the level of damage to the crop, the ultimate goal has always been to maximise the production effort. The year–round favourable climatic conditions in the tropics support the continual survival and proliferation of the paddy bugs population, with the consequential yield losses and poor quality of produce.
At present, the rice farmers could hardly buy Atari which is a more effective and expensive insecticide for paddy bug control and would need free distribution from government if the present crop is to survive the paddy bug infestation.
