Accused hand cart thief remanded –summon issued for absent VC

ALFRED Sukhdeo of Lot 165 Regent and Cummings Streets, Georgetown was on Tuesday remanded to prison for stealing one hand cart.

When he appeared before Georgetown Magistrate Judy Latchman, he pleaded guilty with explanation, saying, “Meh Worship, I always use this cart to fetch people load; and on that day, the police took the cart to Brickdam, and me ain’t thief no cart.”
Particulars of the offence state that on Friday, August 2, at Charlotte and Wellington Streets, he stole one hand cart valued $14,000, property of Courtney Barrow.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, objected to bail on grounds that the defendant has no fixed placed of abode, and there is the likelihood that, if he were granted pre-trial liberty, he may not return for his trial.
Based on the defendant’s explanation, a not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf, and a summon was issued for the VC, who was not present in court.
Hearing Magistrate Latchman’s decision, the defendant requested a short sentence, claiming that he did not want to waste the court’s time. However, when the magistrate re-read the charge to him, he gave the same explanation, hence she discontinued the course of action on which she was embarking, and further remanded Sukhdeo.
The matter stands adjourned until September 5.
