At a recent press conference, Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green indicated that the council is aware that the negative situation of the garbage pileup is posing a serious inconvenience and discomfort, but City Hall is doing the best it can in very daunting circumstances.
However, citizens are of the view that Georgetown is facing a “garbage crisis” although the city’s Solid Waste Management Department has been assuring them over the years that the problem will be corrected.
At multiple press briefings and outreaches, the council has explained to residents that the city’s garbage contractors were experiencing setbacks, time after time, and were unable to collect the waste.
In the meantime, multiple mini-dump sites have appeared in throughout the city as persons seek to deal with their garbage pileup.
However, particular focus by City Hall remains on cleaning central commercial areas of the city and the markets, the abattoir and the hospital.
Meanwhile, many residents are fearful that this “garbage crisis” is contributing to the proliferation of mosquitoes, flies, rodents and other vectors, but the council is urging persons to bury their garbage and advises against burning refuse. Green has also stated that the Vector Control Department has been monitoring certain areas and taking appropriate action.
