LAWRENCE John (no address given) appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman Tuesday, charged with damage to property.
The allegation against him is that, on Monday, July 22, in Smyth Street, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously damaged one length of telephone cable valued $800,000, movable property of a private nature belonging to Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T). Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, told the court that a GT&T employee was passing, saw the defendant chopping the cable and made a report.
But John claimed he was on his way to weed some bushes when he had an urgent call of nature, and when a man came and asked him what he was about to do, he pulled up his pants.
Magistrate Latchman asked John what is his occupation and he responded that he helps out poor people.
A not guilty plea was entered for him but the prosecutor, successfully, objected to bail and John was remanded to prison until on July 31.
