THE President of Venezuela, Mr. Nicolas Maduro, has unveiled proposals to support air and maritime transportation in the CARICOM (Caribbean Community) Region, specifically the provision of international air and ferry services.
He did so on the occasion of the 34th Regular Meeting of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government, in Trinidad and Tobago, during the period of July 4 to 6 last, Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon disclosed.
Luncheon spoke about the Trinidad meeting at his regular post-Cabinet media briefing at Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown.
According to him, President Donald Ramotar led the Guyana team to that forum and it comprised Foreign Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett; Public Works Minister Robeson Benn; and Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh.
Luncheon said President Ramotar emphasised the importance of having CARICOM decisions implemented and the call resonated among participants and observers.
The HPS said the President also acknowledged his admiration for the host’s cultural presentations, especially the re-enactment of the signing of the historic Treaty of Chaguaramas.
“He (Ramotar) expressed some disappointment about decisions not being made at the conference about some critical issues affecting the regional community and its integration,” Luncheon reported.
On a brighter note, the HPS said The Dominican Republic announced its intention of applying for full membership of CARICOM.
