MINISTER within the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Alli Baksh has said the sector will be given a big boost in Region 2(Pomeroon/Supenaam) when a foreign company starts cultivation on a 30,000 acres at Akawini along Lower Pomeroon River.
He disclosed that the investor will be cultivating cabbage, peas, soya, pepper and hill paddy on a large scale and will be producing feeds, also.
According to Minister Baksh, the project, which is at the stage of a feasibility study, will be huge in terms of agricultural development in the Region, especially in the Amerindian community of Akawini.
He said several other transnational companies are interested in investing in the sector here because there is great potential, with its very fertile soil and good conditions for farming.
Baksh said the Aurora Project is another example where government is developing some 5,500 acres of fertile soil to grow rice and other non-traditional crops.
He said that is one more massive investment by government to develop agriculture in this country and it is aimed at increasing rice production and other crops while, at the same time, providing income for new farmers.
Meantime, Baksh blasted the Opposition parties, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and Alliance for Change (AC), charging them with poor vision for agriculture development in the country.
He charged that they have held up many projects with their one seat majority in Parliament.
Baksh said funding is available for schemes that will benefit farmers but the Opposition parties’ attitude is to slow development by blocking funds in Parliament.
