Guyana U-19 Ruggers start with a win

THE Guyana Under-19 Rugby team opened their account at the 2013 NACRA Under-19 15s Tournament with an impressive victory over St Lucia on Sunday.
Guyana, playing in the second match of the day on day two, overcame a lively opposition 29-10. Making a comeback on the regional U-19 scene after a number of years in the wilderness, Guyana went ahead when ‘powerhouse’ Telroy McAlmont opened the scoring with a brace of tries to give Guyana an early 10-0 lead.
Grantley Williams added a third and Jamal Angus a fourth with the latter one converted by Godfrey Broome to give Guyana a 22-0 half-time lead.
A converted try by Kevin Joseph extended the lead to 29-0. St Lucia improved as the game progressed and were rewarded with two late tries, one from Junior Hunter and another from Elvin Joseph to pull the score back to 29-10 at the final whistle.
Earlier in the day, Trinidad and Tobago President’s Select, a second-string team, humbled debutants Turk and Caicos 33-3.
The competition started on Saturday with hosts Trinidad and Tobago getting past Mexico 14-7 and Jamaica defeating Bermuda 10-3. (Kizan Brumell)
