A CONVICTED drug trafficker, who was sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $7.2M for possession of eight kilogrammes of cannabis (marijuana), was released on $750,000 bail, following a petition to Acting Chief Justice Ian Chang.
Wayne Lindie, 37, of Glasgow Housing Scheme, had suffered the penalties at New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court but, his then lawyer, Mr. Ryan Crawford gave notice of appeal.
However, it was another attorney-at-law Mr. Peter Hugh, who petitioned the judge pending the review.
Police Sergeant Phillip Sherriff, prosecuting, had led two witnesses who testified that, last February 11, Cadet Officer Singh was in vehicle PPP 4934 when he observed Lindie carrying a black bag in his left hand, walking North on the Tannery Dam, Savannah Park. He was pursued and the bag, when opened, revealed nine sealed packets containing leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited plant.
In his defence, though, Lindie said he dropped his daughter off at school and was proceeding to his sister’s nearby home to await the dismissal of classes when police called out to him.
He said he responded and the police picked up a bag from nearby and accused him of its ownership.
