THE Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO), the youth arm of the People’s Progressive Party Civic yesterday launched its national 10/10 cricket competition which will feature several tape-ball teams.. This year the competition will be held in honour of assassinated leader of the Working People’s Alliance, Dr Walter Rodney ,who was killed thirty-three years ago.
The announcement was made yesterday during a press conference held by the PYO in the conference room of the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre on High Street, Kingston.
Naming the tournament in honour of Dr Walter Rodney comes just two weeks after the Guyana Government, through its spokesman Dr Roger Luncheon, announced that President Donald Ramotar has decided to establish an International Commission of Inquiry into the death of the Guyanese historian.
Speaking at the press conference, member of the Georgetown steering committee of the PYO, Natasha Sardinha, explained that the competition will be titled the “PYO Championship League” and it will be promoting the interest of the Progressive Youth Organisation in sports as well as the history, work and life of Dr Walter Rodney.
Last year the PYO held their cricket competition in honour of Michael Forde, a PPP activist who was killed after a bomb went off in the vicinity of Freedom House years ago.
The PPP has a functioning library at Freedom House on Robb Street which is named after Michael Forde.
The venture will also serve as an educational exposé for young people and Guyanese as a whole who wish to know about Dr Rodney, his principles and other detailed vital information on the historian and politician.
Meanwhile coordinator of the matches, Andray Yagvak, told the press conference that there will be games played in several parts of the country.
He said that the competition will be a tapeball one which will see almost 36 male teams from across the country take part in the matches.
The first of the games will be regional district games which will be followed by the quarters, semis and grand finals. There will also be a female aspect of the game which will be played simultaneously during a particular phase during the tournament.

From there the best eight teams will be formed into two teams and play in a round-robin format where the best four teams will move on to the semifinals which will be played on the  June 18 at Albion in Berbice.
