SPINNERS Steven Sankar and Shawn Pereira underlined local batsmen’s inability to handle the turning ball on slow pitches, when they destroyed the President’s XI and Essequibo with seven-wicket hauls yesterday in the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) /GTM Under-19 Inter-County three-day tournament. At Police Sports Club (PSC) ground, defending champions GT&T Berbice defeated Essequibo by an innings and 108 runs, while across at the Everest Cricket Club ground, Demerara defeated the President’s XI by eight wickets to maintain their grip on the leader’s position.

At Eve Leary, GT&T Berbice resumed their first innings yesterday on 199 for 3 with David Latchaya and Gudakesh Motie- Kanhai being their not-out batsmen on 36 and 0 respectively, with the former going on to fall four short of his half-century, hitting eight fours in his 46, while Motie made 14.
Shailendra Shameer 32 (3×4, 1×6), Kevon Jahawir 28 (3×4) and Romario Shepherd-DeJonge 26 with four fours, helped GT&T Berbice to a mammoth first-innings lead of 226, even though Herry Greene continued to be a thorn in the batsmen’s side with his 6 for 147.
Batting a second time, Essequibo crumbled for 118 from 22.4 overs against the spin of Pereira, the 2012 National Under-19 skipper, who took 7 for 17 (from 3.4 overs) for match figures of 9 for 40 and Shepherd DeJonge’s 2 for 45 (match figures of 7 for 72).
Avenash Persaud stroked a resilient 52 (4×6, 4×4), Ricardo Adams 21 (3×4, 1×6) and Julio Jones 19 with four fours, but it was not enough to prevent the defending champions from romping to victory inside two days.
At Everest, the President’s XI, who trailed their opponents by 60 runs (and not 45 as was incorrectly stated yesterday), resumed on 5 without loss with Ryan Shun and Anthony Bhupdeo on 2 each and quickly lost Bhupdeo, who was bowled by Dexter George (1 for 15) without any addition to his overnight score.
Shun added 12 to his overnight score, before he was caught and bowled by Sankar, who left the President’s XI on 76 for 5 at lunch, following which he removed Dinesh Mangal for a 41-ball 30 that was decorated with four fours.
This was after the batsman was given a life at mid-on, following the demise of his skipper Keon Morris for 3, Martin Pestano-Belle (8), Akeem Wallace (14) and Yenkini Favorite who failed to score. All followed Mangal back to the pavilion in little or no time after lunch, thanks to Sankar.
The Malteenoes Sports Club right-arm leg -spinner closed off the innings, shortly after, to end with 7 for 47 and match figures of 12 for 64, following his first innings 5 for 17, leaving Narayan who added 52 for the sixth wicket with Mangal unbeaten on 38 that was scored off 103 deliveries and included a solitary four off Stephon Browne.
Chasing 69 for victory, Demerara reached 54 without loss at tea, with the pugnacious Brian Sattaur, who was given two lives on either side of tea by Favorite, unbeaten on 38 that included a hat-trick of fours struck off successive deliveries from Shun and Tagenarine Chanderpaul 12.
After tea, President’s XI saw Shun remove both Chanderpaul for 18 (3×4) and Andrew Gibson in successive overs, before Kamesh Yadram struck him for a four to seal the win, finishing unbeaten on 5 while Sattaur was on 41 from 40 deliveries, with five fours and two sixes struck over midwicket off Mark Hamilton.
With their back-to-back wins, Demerara now lead the points table with 31 points, followed by GT&T Berbice on 22.5 points.
While the players enjoy a rest day today, the final round of matches in the three-day format will bowl off on Saturday, with Demerara taking on GT&T Berbice at the Demerara Cricket Club ground and Essequibo and the President’s XI doing battle at the Wales Community Centre ground.
