THE National Cultural Centre (NCC) will come alive on today and tomorrow with the staging of the comedy “Pleasing Mrs Jones” which tells the story of the main character, Mrs. Jones, a self-centred and insensitive woman, who uncaringly ignores the feelings and wishes of all around her, pandering to the material, while expounding the Christian virtues. This production was previously staged on March 2 of this year, at the Linden Concert Hall, and the hilarity of the comedy brought the proverbial house down.
The performance mesmerised all, including Mr. Godfrey Naughton, a performing artist of wide knowledge and achievement, who promised to bring this gem to the city, and thus this production, is being held in Georgetown.
According to a release, it is felt, that theatre in Guyana has, for a number of years now, been looking for a new identity that fits into the life representation and style of the wide populace.
“In the past, major social issues, for example, the hardships of ban on importation of a long list of commodities, blackouts, long lines for scarce foodstuff etc. played a significant role in the theatre conversation. Those were the halcyon days of LINK SHOW, spawned by the state of national affairs just eluded,” the release stated.
The release further stated that Michael James, who has made his indelible mark on local film making, poetry, music and song writing, drama and theatrical productions, may have stumbled upon a new social driver of conversation, in this new play.
“It purports to be an out and out gut buster of a Comedy. However, its lessons are inescapable. The seemingly endless stories of the male Guyanese population, savage abuse of its females is such that even the hardest hearts condemn men without a second thought. No cases are looked in specificity anymore, and with good reason,” the release explained.
According to the release, the abuse being dealt to the male lead character by his wife Carmella Jones is so common that it is not considered a serious relationship flaw anymore.
“The supplicant reaction the lead ELROY, will make male audience wince, and some may even scream at him, to physically strike back at the woman. James skillfully makes the point of the outside influences that causes the typical tension that characterizes the JONES’ saga,” the release stated.
Michael James started writing plays in 1995, and immediately realised his earthly calling.
The release stated that James said that he believes that his purpose on earth is to entertain God’s people and, in so doing, bring hope to people’s lives.
James is one of Guyana’s best kept artistic secrets, and he has written numerous songs for young upcoming artistes, in and out of the community, such as George Anthony “Chiney” Abrams and Diana Chapman, the release said.
According to the release, he has also written song entries in the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Company Jingle and Song Competition, for musician Brian Clarke of Canada, Selah Muzik of Atlanta Georgia, the national junior and senior calypso competitions; the Linden Town Week theme song, various youth conventions, and numerous artistes in Guyana.
“James has made meaningful contributions to the local film industry, producing material for Cine Guyana. He began making independent films in 2000, and lately, he made two professional short films, “Three Cards and Choices”. The ‘Coal Pot Saga’ was his first movie production, and thus occupies a precious place in his heart,” the release stated.
He also wrote; “To Forgive and Forget”, “Dutty Bundle”, “Family Matters”, “Tit for Tat”,Suar Water People, All Skin Teeth Na Laff, and “Tantimerl and She Junky”. Like many writers, when asked what makes him write, James will say that he is inspired by the common man in is normal day to day struggles. He is currently working on a new feature film, “The Bread Winner’.”
