ON WEDNESDAY last, the HADI’S City Mall officially announced its continued partnership with the Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic IV which for this year will be a two-day affair, scheduled to be held on August 17 and 18 at the Police Sports Club (PSC) ground in Georgetown and Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground, Linden respectively.HADI’S City Mall, a subsidiary of Mohamed’s Enterprise, was among the sponsors for the first time last year and their Managing Director, Nazar Mohamed said the company wants to be associated with development projects, especially in communities like Linden.
“Linden needs investment and development and what you are doing there is encouraging for the business community,” Mohamed told the coordinators, former national sprinter Colin Boyce and Edison Jefford during the simple presentation ceremony.
Boyce, who holds the portfolio of Chairman of the Boyce and Jefford Classic Management Committee, thanked the company for their continued support, adding that sports should be treated as business and corporate examples as these suggest there is hope for continued development.
HADI’S City Mall has specifically sponsored the individual prizes for the Male and Female Masters’ 60m races, which were created to attract former athletes, whom present athletes would have never seen compete in their heyday.
The winners of both races will pocket $25 000 each while second- and third-placers are to receive $15 000 and $10 000 respectively, with trophies accompanying the cash prizes for the Masters’ races that are expected to encourage former greats to roll back the years.
Heats and three distance finals for this year’s event will be hosted at the PSC ground on August 17, with the grand final set for the MSC ground in Linden the following day.
Apart from doling out lucrative cash prizes to clubs and athletes, the Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic IV is aimed at continuing to establish a prominent place for athletics in Guyana and as was evident last year, leading athletes from the Caribbean are scheduled to participate.
