Speaking at home with the Guyana Chronicle yesterday afternoon, the man’s wife said the post-mortem she had witnessed on Monday was devastating. Almost all of the man’s bones had been broken, including those in his neck, and the family is perturbed that, to date, nobody representing the driver of the vehicle has visited them or proffered them any form of compassionate message or gesture.
Singh’s family members are also displeased that the police seem interested only in the driver of the vehicle, and not the other occupants who were in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The late Harry B. Singh had lived in close proximity to where he met his demise, and was heading home when tragedy struck. The vehicle that had struck Singh down reportedly had taken him to the Georgetown Public Hospital, but there are suggestions that the person who is claiming responsibility for his death was not the one driving the vehicle. It was reported that the police have, however, not been paying much attention to that claim.
The vehicle which was involved in that fatality has been impounded at the Kitty Police Station since Sunday. It has a visible damage to its side, but there is no impression on its front to suggest that the man was hit with the wrong side of the vehicle.
A source close to the investigation related that police are of the view that the man might have been hit by the vehicle’s side mirror, and that sent him tumbling to the roadway. Singh’s family members have refuted claims made by the driver on Sunday that, at the time of the accident, the man had been staggering across the road.
DDL expresses sympathy
DDL issued a statement last night expressing its profound sadness at the passing of its Chief Accountant, Mr. Harry Barran Singh.
The company said Singh was “a valued and long standing member of the DDL team”, having joined the then Guyana Distilleries Limited (part of the Bookers Group) in 1973 as a Messenger in the Bottling Plant. ‘H.B.’, as he was universally known, worked his way up via many promotions, and has held posts such as Accounts Clerk, Accounts Supervisor, Assistant Accountant, Purchasing Manager, Accountant, Financial Accountant with the Guyana Distilleries Limited, Guyana Liquor Corporation, and Demerara Distillers Limited.
He was appointed Chief Accountant of DDL and Subsidiaries, on 24th April, 2007, a position which he held until his passing.
Chairman of DDL Dr. Yesu Persaud noted that “H.B’s sudden death is shocking to all his colleagues, especially Finance Controller Vasudeo Singh, and the members of the Finance Department, many of whom he has mentored in his almost forty years with the industry.”
The management and staff of DDL and Subsidiaries also took the opportunity to extend deepest condolences to the wife, children and other relatives of their dearly departed colleague and friend, Harry Barran Singh.
