CHAIRWOMAN of the Yarrowkabra Community Development Council, Mrs Dawn Profit, says her community would be engaging multi-stakeholders to get the ball rolling on various developing projects for the community.
She was at the time speaking with the Guyana Chronicle at Yarrowkabra, as she outlined the difficulties facing the community.
Profit noted that the community has a building through the President’s Youth Choice Initiative, and it is equipped with stoves, sewing machines and materials to produce clothes.
She said Yarrowkabra has over 200 families, with school children in the majority.
The community has electricity and water and about forty per cent of its residents are connected, but a poor road network which is in urgent need of rehabilitation.
The CDC chairwoman indicated that there is a pressing need for a primary school to be built in the community, since the children now have to travel to Kuru Kururu to attend school.
She said that it is very dangerous for the children to be standing on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway in the morning and afternoon to catch transportation to and from school.
Among some successes in the community, she highlighted the fact that Yarrowkabra has a vibrant coal burner association. There are about 40 members and over 100 coal pits where transformation of wood waste to coals is being done.
She noted too that the majority of the members are women and single parents who seek a daily bread for the survival of their families.
Asked about crime in the community, she explained that there is some petty crime but nothing to be alarmed about.
She pointed out that in terms of recreational activities, the community has a ground which was made available by the policing group; but there is need for a community centre so the kids could remove from the street and participate in organised sports.
