Pillion rider without helmet killed in motorcycle accident …driver hospitalized with neck injuries, out of danger

TAVELL Gilbert, 22, of 3723 North Ruimveldt, was  killed yesterday when the motorcycle on which he was the pillion rider, slammed into a car sending him and the driver of the motorcycle into a parapet.

altThe driver of the motorcycle, Marvin Messiah, 23, of 3667 North Ruimveldt was up to press time a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
This publication was informed that yesterday morning, Messiah went to Gilbert’s home and picked him up and they left for work. Both of the men are from the North Ruimveldt area and live just a street apart.
The men were heading west along Mandela Avenue, known as the “back road” when they came into contact with the blue motor car PNN 7257, which was heading in the same direction.
Information reaching the Chronicle suggested that the motorcycle attempted to overtake the car which slowed up to turn south into Pine Apple Street, and it slammed into the driver’s side of the car.
Persons in the area said that the driver of the car may not have put on his signal to turn in a timely manner, thus making it impossible for the driver of the motorcycle to determine that the car was making a turn.alt
After the men impacted the car and were flung on the parapet, those nearby rushed to the scene and immediately took the injured to the Georgetown Public hospital, where Gilbert was determined to be the worst injured.
Doctors at the Accident and Emergency Unit immediately began operating on the young man but he passed away.
This publication was also informed that the now dead man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. He suffered severe head injuries and a broken knee, while Messiah suffered neck injuries and injuries to the left leg.
Over at the hospital, relatives and friends of both of the men were still trying to come to grips with the tragedy.
The mother of the dead man was totally broken at the loss of her only child. The woman said that she was at home when she received a call informing her that her son was involved in an accident.
She reached the hospital in time to see her son’s body being wheeled to the morgue.
