THE sewerage system in this country has been bad for a long time, causing a lot of discontent to citizens. Guyana Water Inc (GWI) started to fix it and then seemingly ran out of money before completion. Two areas that were not completed are Princess Street, Charlestown and Wortmanville, and there may be other areas of which I am not aware.
I am a resident of Princess Street, Charlestown, so I can speak only on what has happened there and Wortmanville, where I am in charge of my uncle’s property. About three months ago, GWI started to work in Princes Street, so I felt good because I thought this was the end of the chamber ordeal we are experiencing. Now that they seem to have completed the work, the stench from the chamber is unbearable. I am still seeing the sewerage tanks coming and pulling out waste. When they leave I can’t go into my bedroom because the stench lingers all night.
At my uncle’s property in Wortmanville, it is worse because the chamber is overflowing in the yard. All the neighbours’ wastes flow into the chamber in my uncle’s yard and now all the mess is coming up in his yard. The downstairs tenant had to call Cevon’s to clean up the mess and has indicated that she will have to move if this situation continues (she is not the first tenant who has had to move because of the insanitary conditions).
Who is supposed to pay to have the chamber cleaned? After the work is seemingly finished, the place is left in a terrible state with mud thrown indiscriminately, impeding the running-off of rain water accumulated on the ground. It seems to me that all the work that has been done is a waste of time and money. Only in Guyana this could happen.
I am requesting that the relevant authorities look into this situation as soon as possible.
