Guyana joins in Caribbean Nutrition Day observation today

GUYANA, through the Food Policy Division of the Ministry of Health, will be joining other countries in the region to mark Caribbean Nutrition Day today.

The occasion has been observed annually since 2004 and is one of several initiatives to promote better health for everyone by way of proper nutrition and exercise.
This year, the theme is ‘Healthy Eating and Active Living: Creating an Enabling School/Work/Community Environment’, which places emphasis on the role of a health promoting environment in facilitating the development and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle.
Caribbean Nutrition Day 2013 observance will take place from 10:00 hrs to 15:00 hrs at Latchmansingh Primary School, Bush Lot Village, West Coast Berbice.
The observance will be in the form of a health fair, consisting of two segments, a health talk and exhibition of booths. Representatives from the Ministries of Health, Education and Agriculture, the National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO) and Rights of the Child Commission (ROC) will be participating.
Some of the things attendees to the fair can expect are:

* meal planning and tasting of low-cost nutritious fruits and vegetables recipes;
* educational games and distribution of stationery for prizes;
* blood pressure and blood sugar testing;
* physical education advice, demonstrations and competitions;
* distribution of seedlings and advice on cultivation;
* display and promotion of locally grown and manufactured produce;
* distribution of baby chicks and advice on animal rearing;
* display and advice on agro-processing as a means of increasing income;
* display, distribution and sale, at a reduced price, of flour and flour-based products and
* rights of the child.
The Ministry of Health promotes healthy eating and active living for all Guyanese, for a healthier Guyana.
