Students of Ulele Primary School at Bat Creek, a village in the Upper Pomeroon River, will now be able to attend school regularly via motorboat, as they no longer have the challenge of paddling small canoes.
On Tuesday the school received a new 15 horse power Yamaha outboard engine and a twenty-foot wooden boat from Guyana Goldfields Inc. through the Amerindian Peoples Association (APA).
President of the APA, Ms. Sharon Jeanee presented the new engine and boat to Toshao of the village, Mr. Kenrick Lewis at Karawab.
Jeanee said that Guyana Goldfields donated $1M through the APA for the purchase of the engine and boat for the Bat Creek community to be used for transporting students to the Ulele Primary School.
She also called on parents of the community to send their children regularly to school. Region 2 chairman Mr. Parmanand Persaud who received the keys for the engine from the APA president and handed it over to the toshoa commended the efforts of Guyana Goldfields and the APA for getting on board to assist students of Bat Creek to travel in comfort to school to pursue their education.
Persaud said the gift of the boat and engine will truly benefit students and the region.
Lewis also thanked Guyana Goldfields and the APA for assisting the Bat Creek community. He said students had to paddle small canoes along the river to attend classes at the Ulele Primary School.
