POLICE reported, yesterday, that the three suspects who had been detained, earlier this week, for questioning about the murders of well-known cambio dealer Totaram Mootoo and his wife, Bhagmatttie, were released after the 72 hours permitted holding time had expired.
Detectives said the investigation is still active and they are following several leads in order to crack the case and, so far, several other persons, of interest, as well, were interrogated and let go.
The case was handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown after initial investigations by sleuths in ‘C’ Division (East Coast Demerara).
Police believe those responsible for the double murder were closely associated with the businessman and his wife and the crime was carefully orchestrated.
The charred remains of the Mootoos were found in their upper flat bedroom at Area ‘Q’ Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara home after a fire caused by arson on May 10.
It is suspected that the couple were beaten and tortured prior to being killed in the house set alight by a home-made bomb.
Post-mortems performed on the remains of the couple established that the husband died as a result of smoke inhalation compounded with burns trauma while the wife succumbed to blunt trauma to the back compounded by trauma.
Police reported that, at about 00:35 hrs on that date, what remained of the Mootoos, called ‘Beer, 54, and ‘Dolly’, 48, were discovered.
