THE growing use of slashers (as opposed to the old-time cutlass, scythe or grass knife) to cut grass in yards, parapets and roadsides is in keeping with the sophistication that Guyanese undoubtedly deserve. Concurrently, we are entitled to protection from the ‘fallout’ that unfortunately accompanies such social development.

It is good to see the many slasher operators wearing personal safety protection from the flying objects that erupt from the use of the machines. However, it is regrettable that protection of road users (pedestrians as well as motorists) against such flying objects is not given similar attention.
In other societies, I have seen the wide use of appropriate guards around the areas being slashed to prevent the bricks and other sharp/hard objects from injuring passersby or damaging vehicles, especially the wind-shields which in turn can cause even more serious accidents.
I heard and know from personal experience that the problem is being exacerbated. Is there a case for legal provision, enforcement and protection?
