GUYANA’s progress is held hostage to negative politics and personalities. Haseef Yusuf, AFC Councillor of Region 6, in a letter to the Chronicle published on May 20, clearly spells out why the actions of the current Opposition are harmful to Guyana.
Also, Dr Luncheon has suggested that there are many who would tear down the country to get their way. He said that they will destroy the country if it allows them to remove the government. For the AFC leaders it is more personal than political. For the PNC, it is always about political power. Even if the Marriott is somewhat of a financial risk, the hotel and expanded airport success could be enhanced by a $20 million Specialty Hospital and the boosting of the tourism sector. It is interesting to note that Jamaica is planning a US$200 million investment for a Specialty Hospital. They cited their location and infrastructure as a basis for its possible success.
The AFC’s position on the Anti-Money Laundering Amendment Bill is counter-productive if the best interest of Guyana and their supporters are to be served. Why they are willing to risk affecting so many aspects of Guyana relationships in the international area is unfathomable.
Perhaps, the old saying about – “Throwing out the baby with the bath water” is what may actually be happening in Parliament. Continuing this way is not acceptable. Either some Opposition leaders or supporters demand a change in tactics or a general election needs to be called to resolve this impasse that hinders progress that is possible now and may or may not come later.
