Gordon gives back to cycling … 16-year-old Agard receives new bike

“I AM PROUD to see the progress being made by young cyclists in Guyana, so this is just another way of showing my appreciation. I get bikes from my team and as I get them, I pass them on to young cyclists, as I always wanted to give back to the sport in Guyana.”

Those were the words of United States-based veteran Guyanese cyclist Aubrey Gordon, who moments earlier had placed a broad smile on the face of 16-year-old Shaquille Agard of Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club, when he presented him with a Casati brand racing cycle.
Gordon believes Agard is among a large group of skilful young cyclists, who are currently dominating the cycling landscape, giving their senior counterparts major competition, highlighting the glorious future of the sport locally.
“The standard has been raised and I am proud of that. Just look at the just-concluded three-stage race; it was well organised and highly competitive and we can only give kudos to Hassan Mohamed, who always does a good job when it comes to cycling in Guyana.
“I think with him (Mohamed) keeping all these races, it helps raise the level of competitiveness in Guyana, a country which has the best young riders in the Caribbean and you must give him kudos for this,” Gordon stated.
He was making reference to Guyana’s very own 2012 Junior Sportsman-of-the-Year Paul DeNobrega and his team, who dominated junior cycling in not only Guyana, but also the Caribbean, with their performance in both the Inter-Guiana Games and Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships.
In accepting the bike, Agard expressed his gratitude to Gordon for the kindness, noting that he will make maximum use of it in his endeavours to become a better rider not only for his club, but Guyana as well.
Both Gordon and Agard competed in the National Sports Commission-organised and sponsored 31st Annual Independence three-stage cycle road race which was won by Barbados’ 19-year-old cyclist Jamol Eastman, while Gordon placed second in the Veterans’ category to Horace Burrowes.
