From Red Dragon… $650,000 bail for second human trafficking defendant

SELWYN Lewis, of Lot 154 Nutmeg Street, Festival City, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, charged with human trafficking.

Particulars of the offence said, between June 1 and June 30, 2011, at Red Dragon Hotel on Robb Street, also in the city, he trafficked a female Brazilian juvenile for the purpose of exploitation.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that, having received the file and statements, it is likely that Lewis will face another charge and he objected to bail for him.
But defence counsel, Peter Hugh said Lewis was granted $10,000 station bail and, if he has a passport, would willingly lodge it. He admitted that the defendant had a previous conviction, in 2005, for a different offence.
The lawyer said the clothes vendor has no other pending case.
Prosecutor Telford claimed Lewis is a flight risk, he having travelled to various countries.
However, his objection was overruled and the father of six was ordered to post $650,000 surety until June 4.
Lewis also known as ‘Selly’ is the second man to be charged with committing the offence at Red Dragon. The other is Raymond Ali called Clement, 61, of Lot 15 Delhi Street, Prashad Nagar, in the city, too. But he did not make an appearance when his case was called in court on April 5.
